In Chapter ten, Voiceless Dying, he shares with us the plight of the poor, and gives the poor a voice. He underscores that Africa is losing its teachers, doctors, civil servants, farmers, mother and fathers. Already there are more than ten million orphaned children. How can we help them speak up? Thankfully it is starting to happen with private contribution such as the Global funds to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria. But much more is required and rich nations must pitch in!
In Chapter 11, he discusses the Millennium Plan which lays out the UN’s eight steps development plan to eradicate extreme poverty by 2025. Sach’s highlighted the incredibly successful Marshall Plan after WWII which committed 2% of GNP from rich nations to rebuilding Japan/Europe to its current levels of less than the 0.2% of GNP today. Sach’s delves into the political woes facing the initiatives to fight poverty as US interests have shifted dramatically since 9/11 and funding has dried up to less than 1 billion for all of 2005.In Chapters 12-15, Sach’s lays out the on-the-ground solutions to end, poverty, the cost of the investment to do so, and provides a framework that can be adapted by nations around the world to make it happen.
In Chapters 16,17, 18, Sach’s dispels the myths about aid and corrects some of the misconceptions of working with extreme poverty, especially in Africa. He moves to argue that the richest nations can afford to make the contribution and commitment to eradicate extreme poverty and in doing so, secure global well being.
